Whitevane Pond

The Fishing   Rating: Very Good

A truly well established and picturesque venue dating back more than 200 years.  Located on the edge of St Leonard's forest deep in the Sussex countryside, this fine fishery is renowned throughout the UK carp fraternity for its monstrous inhabitants, some of which run to well over 40lbs. In addition to the huge carp Whitevane holds, there is also a good head of specimen sized Bream, Roach and of course Tench (some of which have been reported at over 12lb). The lake itself varies in depth from around 5 feet in the margins, dropping off to around 15 feet in the middle, There are plenty of features to fish to with an abundance of Lillie pads, reed beds and the islands (all three of them). Whitevane tactics have been the subject of much debate, but it seems that the majority of fish are caught on fresh boilies fished tight to the features, saying that pellet, corn, worms and even maggots do account for fish on a regular basis so any angler worth his salt should have at least one of those baits as back up.

Peg Availability   Rating: Good
Approximately 40 pegs on the lake, so there is always space.

There are also a couple of double swims (or pegs very close to each other).

Walk To Peg   Rating: Very Good

Not a huge venue, so the walk is manageable especially since the addition of a properly constructed stone path, which allows long stay anglers to use carp barrows with ease.

Parking   Rating: Excellent

Secure on site parking is available, with space for around 35 cars.

The venue gates open at 6:30am and close at dusk.

Facilities   Rating: Excellent

On site facilities are adequate with a lodge containing hot and cold running water, a kettle, gas cooker and fridge freezer.

There is also a large, clean toilet block.

Busy   Rating: Good

Whitevane like most good southern specimen waters does get busy, particularly during the peak summer months, but with nearly forty pegs on the lake you can always find somewhere especially if you don't mind 'spooks corner', a much neglected corner of the lake where bobbins aren't the only thing to go bump in the night. The 'white lady'  reportedly walks her dog after dark around that corner of the lake, which is enough to keep some of the easier spooked anglers at the other end.
